Wanita MCA will be the only political party to offer legal advisory services and aid for women.
According to Heng, “MCA has been very proud to have Michael Chong in our complaints bureau to manage cases that are brought to us.”
Among the cases the centre will attend to, are those involving domestic violence, rape and sexual abuse.
Saying that 95% of cases of this nature involved women, Heng added, “It is time for Wanita MCA to take the responsibility to help women.”
As the only political party to establish its own support centre for women, Heng explained the centre will attend to women of all races, religions and social backgrounds.
Besides that, the centre will also serve to fight and defend the rights of women who are being suppressed.
According to Polis DiRaja Malaysia’s (PDRM) crime statistics 3,268 cases of domestic violence, 1,584 cases of rape and 1,071 cases of sexual abuse have been reported in 2014 (August), with women making up 95% of the statistics.
The Legal Advisory and Aid Centre, which will start operations in November this year, is located at Level 7, Wisma MCA in Jalan Ampang which will open its office to abused women regardless of race, religion and social background.
Among other initiatives to empower women by Wanita MCA, are the establishment of Legal Advisory Committee with legal professionals to aid women on their rights which includes the Married Woman’s Act and Micro Financial Scheme to support women entrepreneurs.
